Bryant will be held out of both of the Lakers' remaining two preseason games for the purposes of rest, as his attention is squarely on the regular season after averaging 27 minutes per game over the Lakers' first six preseason games. Wayne Ellington, Jordan Clarkson, and Wesley Johnson will see the surplus run on the wing for the Lakers for the remainder of the preseason.

Bryant began his off-season training regimen on Monday, after having been cleared for running and shooting as he returns from a broken bone in his kneecap that caused him to miss all but six games this past season. He has been ramping up his activity level the last few weeks, and was confident about pushing harder after receiving positive feedback during a consultation last week with the doctors in Germany who previously performed the platelet-rich plasma treatment on his knees.

The Lakers officially announced on Wednesday that Bryant is indeed out for the remainder of the season. This isn't a surprise, given how little progress he's made since suffering his knee injury over 10 weeks ago, and how little of the 2013-14 season remains. Although the Lakers' original estimate was that Bryant would miss approximately six weeks, it will end up having cost him the final 17 weeks of the season. He'll now have his eyes set on the start of the 2014-15 season, during which he'll work under the two-year, $48.5 million extension that he signed with the Lakers in November.

The Lakers are expected to declare Bryant out for the rest of the season later this week, according to team sources. Kobe is not accompanying the team on its two-game road trip to Oklahoma City and San Antonio, instead staying back to be reexamined by team doctor Steve Lombardo. And considering where his level of discomfort remains with the fractured lateral tibial plateau in his left knee, barring an unforeseen change, the team will finalize the decision that Bryant will not play again this season. Kobe is now just over 10 weeks removed from the injury and far beyond an initial six-week timetable. "These injuries are really weird," said Bryant. "There's nothing you can do to speed up that process. You almost have to sit and just wait and wait for the bones to heal and then go from there."

The Lakers' plan is to re-evaluate Kobe on Friday, at which time he may be cleared to advance his rehab beyond riding a stationary bike. In an absolute best-case scenario where he gets that go-ahead, advances quickly through more levels of activity to full-court practices, and has no setbacks along the way, and we're talking about a return for a handful of games in April. If he is not cleared to increase his activities on Friday, then we can officially close the door on Kobe's 2013-14 season. He's now just over 10 weeks removed from the injury. "These injuries are really weird," said Bryant. "There's nothing you can do to speed up that process. You almost have to sit and just wait and wait for the bones to heal and then go from there."

Kobe's return this season continues to look less likely, as coach Mike D'Antoni offered an update on Monday: "The doctors haven't cleared Kobe so it's a non-issue right now." With only six weeks left in the season and little by way of actual progress in his recovery, this is looking more and more like a lost season for Kobe. Even if he does manage to return, it should be viewed more as a tune-up to get him ready for the 2014-2015 season than an opportunity for owners to reap the benefits of some vintage Kobe lines. If there were any previous doubts, this now locks in minutes for Jodie Meeks, Kent Bazemore, Xavier Henry, and Nick Young (when healthy) on the wing for the duration of the season.

Another Kobe update has produced a familiar refrain: he's still dealing with pain, soreness, and swelling in the knee, and his next evaluation has been pushed out another three weeks. Considering that he's still limited to riding a stationary bike, and that his next evaluation won't come before mid-March, it's fairly safe to say that his season is almost certainly over (although Kobe will hold out for as long as possible before allowing any kind of official announcement). If there were any previous doubts, this now locks in minutes for Jodie Meeks, Nick Young, and Wes Johnson on the wing for the duration of the season.
